Catalent Introduces the SECURE-VIAL™ Technology for Innovative and Cost Effective Delivery of Injectable Pharmaceuticals
Date: 11/18/2008

SOMERSET, NJ, November 17, 2008 — Catalent Pharma Solutions, one of the leading providers of advanced technologies and outsourced services to the global pharmaceutical, biotechnology and consumer health industry, announces the introduction of the SECURE-VIAL™ technology, a new patent-pending delivery system for injectable drug products. Catalent is launching the SECURE-VIAL™ technology to the scientific community this week at the annual meeting of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS).

The SECURE-VIAL™ system is a specially designed polypropylene vial containing a rubber stopper that is created through a Blow-Fill-Seal manufacturing process. Blow-Fill-Seal is an advanced manufacturing process by which containers are formed from plastic resin, filled with a liquid, and then sealed, all within a contained and highly automated process. Blow-Fill-Seal has been used for many decades in the manufacture of sterile liquid pharmaceuticals, such as ophthalmic and nebulized respiratory products, and its potential is becoming increasingly recognized for injectable liquid products.

In contrast to more traditional aseptic vial-filling processes, the process used to fill the SECURE-VIAL™ system is highly automated and allows very limited exposure of the product to the environment. This provides quality and sterility assurance benefits, while lowering costs through elimination of processing steps and reducing labor and component costs. The vial design, which includes a specially designed rubber stopper and unique one-handed opening feature, provides both convenience and safety benefits for healthcare practitioners versus traditional glass vials.

“In launching the SECURE-VIAL™ system, Catalent is proud to continue its history of innovation. We are committed to helping our customers improve outcomes for patients and reduce total cost of patient care,” said Richard Yarwood, Group President of Catalent’s Sterile Technologies segment.
