What were the skills and experiences that you learned in the military that most impacted your personal life and professional career outside the military?

Besides getting used to waking up early?? I think the military helped me become more comfortable with establishing relationships with others - across all ranks - whether it was a sailor on the Ops floor or a Captain in a morning briefing. As much as I appreciate a set schedule and a routine (just ask my husband) - I've learned that I will survive through change. And now I even welcome it at times!

Is there one moment or experience that stands out above the rest during your military career?

My deployment was definitely one of the best experiences in my military career. It gave me an opportunity to meet a lot of great fellow sevicemen and women, and I was able to see parts of the world I likely wouldn't have seen on my own. Pulling into port in Bulgaria with the ship's crew 'manning the rails' - everyone dressed in their white uniform - was a very proud moment!!

In your experience, what are the typical qualifications and experiences that a veteran will bring to an organization?

Self-discipline, teamwork, focus on mission accomplishment, task oriented, adaptability, willingness to take risks.

What were the skills and experiences that you learned in the military that most impacted your personal life and professional career outside the military?

I learned how to operate as part of a team. Great teamwork taught me how to be a good follower and in turn how to be a leader. As nuclear personnel we were drilled constantly in high pressure situations; I believe that ability to stay cool under pressure will serve me well the rest of my life.

Is there one moment or experience that stands out above the rest during your military career?

On Sept 11, 2001, Enterprise was beginning her voyage home from the Arabian Gulf. We were traveling south, towards South Africa and were preparing “Shellback” ceremonies for sailors for which this would be their first time crossing the equator (this would have been my first time crossing the equator). Soon after the first plane crashed into the North Tower we were turned north and traveling at full steam back to the Gulf, outrunning the escorts in our battle group. We sat in the waters off Southwest Asia awaiting our orders; later, my ship launched the planes that began Operation Enduring Freedom.

In your experience, what are the typical qualifications and experiences that a veteran will bring to an organization?

I believe a veteran brings leadership and the ability to facilitate teamwork. Veterans are trained to react under pressure with calmness and focus. Veterans are responsible, accountable, organized and have a honed skill for attention to detail.
