Laser Diffraction Particle Size Analysis: A Powerful Tool for Rapidly Screening Nebulizer Formulation

Nebulizers are widely used to deliver inhaled drugs for both local and systemic action. The particle size distribution (PSD) of the delivered aerosol droplets directly influences disposition behavior in the lungs (and subsequently clinical efficiency) and is therefore a critical parameter when characterizing nebulizer performance. While PSD can be measured aerodynamically by cascade impaction, this discussion, appearing in the January 2010 issue of Drug Delivery Technology, explores a robust and efficient alternative - laser diffraction particle size analysis - for rapidly screening nebulizer formulations with directly comparable results.
