Catalent Presents At The 5th Annual Improving Solubility Conference

Catalent Expert Presents on Bioavailability Enhancement Solutions at 5th Annual Improving Solubility Conference

Somerset, NJ March 23, 2011 — Irena McGuffy, Group Leader, Softgel Formulation, Catalent Pharma Solutions, will be presenting at the 5th Improving Solubility Conference on March 28-30, 2011, in Philadelphia, PA. Ms. McGuffy’s presentation, “Softgel Technology as a Lipid-Based Delivery Tool for Bioavailability Enhancement,” will take place on Tuesday, March 29 at 9:45 AM.  The presentation will focus on strategies for oral delivery for poorly soluble drugs including: the use of self-emulsifying microemulsions and nanoemulsions; the role digestion plays in development of lipid-based delivery systems; modified release softgels and Vegicaps® capsules with matrix fills to extend drug release allowing for lower Cmax and reduced side effects associated with spikes in blood concentration; and film-coated capsules for controlling drug release and targeting delivery. Key presentation take-away messages include achieving and maintaining increased solubilization of poorly soluble drugs, affecting membrane permeation, and current and future approaches utilizing softgel technology.

Throughout her career, Ms. McGuffy has held various positions in product development and technical services, as well as analytical services, with a focus on immediate and controlled release solid dosage form development, and formulation of poorly soluble compounds. In 2007, Ms. McGuffy joined Catalent Pharma Solutions and has expanded her expertise to softgel formulation and process development, scale up, technology transfer and validation. She currently leads the Softgel Formulation team at Catalent’s Somerset, NJ site. Ms. McGuffy is a registered pharmacist with a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy and a Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Zagreb, Croatia.  She is a member of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists.
